Middle School

Middle School Elective Courses

Because of Oakwood’s eight-period day, students are able to complete all of their core academic subjects and still select from a wide variety of electives. These courses are generally one trimester in length and are designed to provide students the opportunity to explore various interests. In addition, some courses are required to be taken during the elective period. Oakwood requires the following single trimester courses:

  • Computer Competence - 6th Grade
  • Geography 1 - 7th Grade
  • Geography 2 - 8th Grade
  • One Public Speaking Course during Middle School

Most electives are offered each year, but some will vary depending on student and faculty interest with a high degree of effort focused on providing selections from many different disciplines. The sample list and descriptions provided here are geared for a student audience:

Art Exploration

“Exploration” is the operative word in this exciting course, which is all about ‘what do you want to know?’ ‘What would you like to investigate?’ Make your own bound book – make the paper that goes in the book! Study some architecture and design your own building. Try on a little Art History – whatever DID happen to Van Gogh’s ear, anyway? Say, ever thought about maybe a career in art? What careers are available? You might be surprised! There is no limit to where your imagination can soar in this popular class.
